Which breakdown cover level?
As you will have seen choosing which breakdown cover level is right for you can vary from provider to provider a little. Every recovery company offers a slightly different service including the way they describe the breakdown cover levels.
Basically to make it simple there are essentially 4 levels of cover, some of which you can then add European cover to in order to cover you when you go over the channel :

Roadside Assistance
Every breakdown recovery policy includes the basic roadside cover. So if you breakdown (provided not at home) someone will be sent to try and fix the problem at the roadside. If they cannot fix the vehicle, they will tow to the nearest recommended garage. In all cases, your policy should include about an hour of free labour, but if you needed some spare parts, then these are not included
Vehicle Recovery
Breakdown recovery will cover your car and it's occupants to be transported to any place you wish within the UK mainland if it can't be fixed at the roadside.
Home Start (or Home Call out)
Your policy will cover your car when it breaksdown in your driveway, outside the front door or within about 1/4 mile of your home (after which roadside assistance kicks in - although that won't cover you at home or closer than 1/4 mile to your home).
Onward Travel
Just as it sounds - your cover will enable you to continue your travels or journey. They all do this a little differently, but check the small print as some offer car hire to allow you to continue your journey or get back home, some offer hotels whilst repairs are done, all cover the cost of transport to fetch your car.
